? Sc fetter

Sc fetters ‘fetters, restrictions’ (plural only) has a specific legal meaning in Scots Law viz ‘restrictions imposed on a property etc by a deed of entail’ (see DSL-SND1). As a place-name it may therefore refer to some such restriction which the land-owner had placed on the property in his or her will. In the mid-nineteenth century it belonged to Captain Wemyss of Scotstarvit, by which time it was known as North Scotstarvit (OS Name Book 14, 53).

Alternatively, it might be a transferred name from Fetters LEU (PNF 4).

It appears on OS 6 inch 1st edn (1855) and OS Pathf. as North Scotstarvit. It is now a ruin.

This place-name appeared in printed volume 2
