? + Sc toun
The first element of this name, which appears in five different places in Fife alone, is obscure, though Sc rye-miln ‘mill specialising in rye’ should perhaps be considered.
Compare also Rumbleton (Law), Gordon parish BWK (Rynmyldoun 1441 APS, Remyltoun 1470 RMS ii no. 988, Rymmiltounlaw 1516 RMS iii no. 98). Williamson (1942, 134) tentatively derives this from the OE f. personal name Rimhild, while Johnston says it contains the (male) personal name Rumbeald (Rumbold), neither of which explanation is very satisfactory for the Fife examples.
OS Pathf. also shows Remiltoun Cottages, to the south of Remiltoun.
