‘Unsteady tree’? This is a very tentative suggestion on the basis of Sc verb cockle ‘to totter, be unsteady and easily knocked down or overturned’, from which comes the adjective cockly ‘unsteady’ (Aberdeenshire; SND, DSL). However, given its coastal situation, the first element may be a variant of Sc coble ‘flat-bottomed boat’.
