This is a problematical place-name, which occurs throughout northern England and southern Scotland. Margaret Scott, in her comprehensive discussion of this name, tentatively suggests that there may be a link between these names and wells dedicated to St Martin, specifically associated with his summer feast-day, that of his translation (4 July), known in Sc as ‘St Martin Bullion’s Day’, from French bouillant ‘boiling, hot’, with reference to the weather at that time of year, in contrast to his main feast-day, Martinmas, 11 November (2000, 41-3).

OS Pathf. also shows Bullions Farm Cottages.
