Sc shaw is defined as ‘a small, especially a natural wood, a thicket’ by CSD. DSL adds the meaning ‘broad-bottomed slope’. There is a relief feature marked on OS Pathf. as Saline Shaw immediately north of the steading. However, Ainslie/Fife shows a relatively large clump of woodland to the north, where North Shaw Wood is now marked.
This place-name, shortened to Shaw, appears in OS Pathf. North Shaw Wood (NS997935), which also appears on OS 6 inch (1855), and South Shaw Wood (NS995934), which appears on OS 6 inch (1855) and OS Explorer (2001), but not on OS Pathf.
