? Sc muir + ? Sc mailing

Sc mailing ‘tenant farm (or rent paid for such)’ is connected with Sc mail ‘rent’ (cf English ‘blackmail’). It might therefore be interpreted ‘tenant farm on the muir or rough grazing’, with muir used adjectivally. This element is certainly found in Cordis Mealing KCQ (Cordies Mealen 1808 GHP 2, Cordiesmailing 1827 Ainslie/East Fife) and Peterismeling ELI (1643 RMS ix no.1470).

This is probably also the same element as appears in Borredgemelon on Ainslie/Fife (1775), now Blairsgreen SLN; as well as in Cormailin # (Cormailin 1828 SGF) TOB, SLN (c.NT019874), and * Mailing WMS, q.v.
