‘Wear out’? This may belong to the wide-spread category of humorous Sc names referring to the difficulty of earning a living from the land. For other examples of such names, see Pilkhambare ATL. OS Name Book 92, 56 (under KGL) gives no variants, simply describing the place as ‘Two small rows of cottages occupied by laborers (sic) on the farm of Auchmuty’.
Warout is in KGL on Ainslie/Fife and RHP3640 (1811), but seems to straddle the KGL/MAI boundary on SGF (1828). The OS name Book, despite the Auchmuty MAI connection, as well as the OS 6 inch (1856), assign it to KGL, but on OS 1 inch (1899) it appears to be on the north side of the boundary, in MAI. It is now the name of part of Glenrothes New Town.
