‘Red wells’. OS Pathf. shows several wells to the north and west of the farm. OS Name Book 9, 23 notes: ‘I have been informed by some of those whose names are given that the name has been derived from wells which have been on the farm, the water of which was of a reddish colour’. The redness, probably a result of iron in the local rocks and soil, also explains the second element in nearby Strathruddie ADN. It may also explain at least some of the various names in white and fionn in KGL, such as Finglassie, Finmont, Kinninmonth and White Hill, with the colour adjective used contrastively. However, see under Finmont, Kinninmonth and White Hill for other possible explanations of the use of the colour-adjective in these names.
