While on maps it appears to refer to the slope between Bernard’s Smithy and Templehall ABO, given the usual meaning of brae in Fife as referring to a steep road, it may originally have been used of the rise in the so-called Back Road to Kirkcaldy east of the Bernard’s Smithy crossroads.
OS Name Book: ‘A portion of an enclosure slightly elevated a short distance east of Rosevale Cottage [on the Great North Road, north of Bernard’s Smithy], it receives this name from small flags or slates having been dug out of the earth here’ (134, 14).
