Presumably gallows were in the vicinity. If so, they were not the main gallows for the constabulary of Kinghorn, which was at Gallowhill at the west end of Kinghorn Loch, for more details of which see KGH Introduction.

The name survives on OS Pathf. in Galliston Quarry and Galliston Wood. Gallowstown appears on Ainslie/Fife (1775), on the south side of the road running east to Boglily and Datie Mill (the B 925), and it is this that gives the above NGR.
