Bows Bridge 1832 Great Reform Act plan [NLS maps website]
Bois Bridge 1856 OS 6 inch 1st edn.
? Sc bow + Sc brig or SSE bridge
The 1832 form suggests the first element is likely to be Sc bow ‘cattle’; alternatively it may be a development of Sc bowbrig ‘arched bridge’, for which see PNF 5 (Elements Glossary).
A bridge crossing the Keithing Burn, ‘on the Great North Road’ according to OS Name Book 74, 13. It is to the north of the town. In PNF 1 it was suggested that it could have been a garbled form of (pons) borealis ‘north bridge’ of 1539. This is unlikely, the suggestion having been made before I was aware of the 1832 form.
