‘Bell-shaped knowes or small hills’? It is shown as a settlement on early maps. The name has survived in the Belleknowes Industrial Estate. The NGR is for Bells Knows as it appears on OS 6 inch 1st edn. (1856).
The name may appear on Blaeu (Pont) West Fife as Belzeid, where the second element could represent heid ‘head’. It is marked as a settlement on a hill immediately north-west of the burgh of Inverkeithing. Alternatively it may be a garbled version of Selvage IKG, which is placed on Blaeu (Gordon) Fife in approximately the same relationship to the burgh.
