‘The end of the loch’. The loch in question appears to have been in the lower-lying land to the south of Lochhead which has now been entirely quarried away. It may have been this loch which is called Black Loch on various Blaeu maps (for more details of which see Black Loch DFL above). The loch is shown on Ainslie/Fife (1775), draining south-east into the Town Loch, along with a now lost Petocks Walls (Peatwells 1828 SGF) on its south side. SGF (1828) shows this same loch draining into what is now the Baldridge Burn. OS 6 inch (1856) shows the ‘loch’ area as an extensive marsh.

This same loch has given rise to the now lost Lochtail Ainslie/Fife (1775), about 800 m to the west of Lochhead. This appears as Loch Stail Roy (1753) sheet 17, 5, while on SGF (1828) it seems to be represented by Schoolend. It is at or near OS Pathf. Muirside (NT090906).
