Sc iron + Sc miln
‘Mill for the production of iron’. OS Name Book 1853 × 1856 (72, 8) describes Iron Mill as follows: ‘an old water mill formerly used for the manufacture of Iron, but now idle’. It adds that close by is Nether Mill, ‘an Iron foundry ... it is also used as a threshing mill, and is propelled by water. Property of the Earl of Elgin.’ It would seem therefore that Nether Mill took over the iron work of Iron Mill, ‘now idle’ The name survives in OS Pathf. Ironmill Bay. While Ainslie/Fife writes the name Ironmill on the west (TOB) side of the mouth of the Lyne Burn, all the other maps listed above show it on the east side.
