Sc den + Sc heid

‘Top of the den or steep valley’. Deanhead is at the top of the steep northern bank of the burn which flows east out of Roscobie Reservoir. However, the eponymous den or dean is the one marked on OS Pathf. as The Dean, which lies about 1 km to the north-west, since Old Deanhead (ruins) is marked on OS 6 inch 1st edn. (1856) just east of The Dean (NT089937), while just to the west of The Dean the same map marks Deanfaulds (ruins) (Deanfolds 1828 SGF). Both these buildings are shown but not named on OS Pathf.
