Absence of early forms makes it impossible to be sure even about the original language in which this place-name was coined. One possibility is that it is from G calltainn ‘hazel’; another from Sc coo + Sc den ‘cow den(s) or steep valley(s)’; a third from Sc cow ‘shrub, bush, especially of heather, broom or whin (gorse)’ (SND) + Sc den, in the sense ‘heathery, broomy or whinny den(s)’.

Occupied till about 1940, it is now a ruin (2004).
