Sc clay + ?
There is a remarkable variation in the second element of this name within a relatively short time period. Whatever the original element, it became assimilated to Sc syke ‘a small burn or ditch, often in boggy land’. Later maps such as OS Pathf. mark Brucehaven q.v. where early OS maps have Claysikes.
