? Sc bucky + Sc burn
? ‘Gushing burn’ or ‘burn where there is a bucky’, i.e. the sluice of a mill-pond, ‘a place where water gushes out’, from a Scots verb, buck, bukk, ‘to pour forth, gush out’ (DSL).
Originally the name of a burn, the upper reaches of the Lyne Burn, it also appears on the early maps of Fife as a settlement-name between Touch and Halbeath to the east of Dunfermline, just north of the burn. It survives today, however, as it began, as a burn-name.
