‘Foot of the brae or (steep) slope’. It referred originally to the bay and coastline at the foot of a high and very steep slope. The name appears on the OS Pathf. in Braefoot Point NT176831, Braefoot Bay NT180833 and Braefoot Plantation. It has also given its name to the Braefoot Bay Marine Terminal immediately north-east of Braefoot Bay. The whole headland is known locally as Braefoot.
