Praybrae
Praybrae CUS S NS961886 1 60m
Prebry 1783 Stobie
Praybrae 1866 OS 6 inch 1st edn.
A difficult name. ‘A knoll (sic) giving its name to a farm on the Tulliallan Estate in the north-east quarter of the old moor of Culross. In modern times it has been corrupted to Prayer Brae’ (Beveridge 1885, ii, 383). From this description, as well as from Stobie’s form Prebry, it looks likely that the second element is not the common Sc brae, although that is what it has been assimilated to.
The name has survived in OS Pathf. Praybrae Wood south of the settlement. The above NGR for the settlement is taken from OS 6 inch (1866) which also shows Pray Brae as a hill. OS Explorer (2001) spells this Preybrae Wood.
