‘Mound’. DSL mote, motte, moit, ‘a natural or artificial mound’. It was the entrance to a coal pit built in the sea by Sir George Bruce at the beginning of the seventeenth century. A shaft sunk in the sea a short distance below high water mark, it was encased with three concrete walls which rose above the surface of the water. It was destroyed by a storm in 1617 and never used again (NMRS NS98 NE 9). On OS Explorer it is marked as an antiquity and described as ‘17th Century Coal Shaft’.
