‘Field, enclosure, enclosed settlement’? See Gartarry TUL for more on G gart. While this is a common element throughout central Scotland west of the medieval borders of Fife, it is unusual to find it as a simplex i.e. on its own, and with no occurrences earlier than the late eighteenth century.

NGR is inferred from Stobie, but OS Explorer 367 (2001) Garden Wood, on or very close to the site, probably contains a disguised form of this name. The name appears neither on OS 6 inch 1st edn. (1866) nor on OS Pathf.
