pn Morton or en *Muirton + Sc or SSE burn

The place-name is likely to refer to William earl of Morton, or one of his kin, who held the lands of nearby Craigfodd (Craigfode) in 1606 (Retours Fife no. 173). It may, however, have been named after a lost local place-name *Muirton. The lack of records of the name before 1856 makes it impossible to be certain.
