Sc hog + Sc lair
‘A place where young sheep (Sc hog) lie down’; Sc lair ‘a place where cattle or sheep lie down; a part of a pasture where cattle or sheep go or are taken to rest’ (DOST). This meaning is confirmed by OS Name Book (28, 26), which describes it as: ‘A hollow on the west side of the West Lomond, it appears to have been a slip of the mountain, and being a sheltered spot in the Winter Season, is used as a place of safety for sheep’.
