This is named after the nearby sandbank Wonder Bank (also OS Pathf.), which appears to be just over the county boundary into PER. ‘It is so called because the fishermen were astonished at the first man who fished thereon catching any fish, that they exclaimed ‘tis a a wonder: it has been called “The Wonder” ever since’ (OS Name Book 38, 49).
