‘A long and narrow stripe of water in the River Tay, it is about sixty chains long by about four chains broad and is bound during the time of low water by sand banks’ (OS Name Book 38, 8). It may have been facetiously named after Halley’s Comet, which had last appeared in 1835, with reference to its long, narrow shape.[366]
