? Sc muir + Sc toun

‘Farm on a muir’? If the first element is Sc muir, the sixteenth-century forms are a very early written realisation of the local pronunciation of muir as mair (see also CSD under muir). However, as this pronunciation is not otherwise reflected in the spelling of Fife place-names containing muir, there is possibly another word involved here.

It forms part of Over Rankeilour MML.
