In the 1790s the local minister writes that it is ‘of considerable height, and has been planted for several years’. He adds: ‘Vessels, on making land from the east seas, are assisted and directed by this mount, and by Monzie church, which stands on the top of an eminence beneath it, as a land-mark’ (OSA, 652).
