‘Devil’s hollow’, it refers to the hollow, described in OS Name Book (45, 19) as a ‘ravine’, which divides the two summits called Black Laws (q.v. above). At its east end is a prehistoric burial cairn (at NO402199), which may have once enjoyed some diabolical reputation, giving rise to the name.
