Sc south + ?

The second element is a puzzle. In 1610 Southfeld is given as an alternative to Southeild, with the assimilation of the unusual second element to the more common Sc field already in evidence about 50 years earlier (Assumption, 14). Thereafter forms in –field come to dominate, although the 1775 form Southead shows that the original form had not been completely displaced, but had been re-interpreted as Sc heid or SSE head rather than field.
