‘Trouble farm’ i.e. farm which is difficult to work? There was another place of this name near Friarton FGN, on the LEU/FGN boundary (see under Comerton House LEU). The specific is found also in Cumberland # KCQ (PNF 3). There are several places in Aberdeenshire called Cummerton, which Alexander would derive from G comar ‘confluence’, which is very unlikely.
It lies a short distance north-east of Earlshall. On RHP1275 (1789) the farm of Cummerton is shown separated from Earlshall by the farm of Inchmuir.
