‘Big end, end of the big water’. Bigend was a substantial farm lying on the old road from Earlshall to Kinshaldy and at the southern end of the long canal-like body of water called Big Water (around NO485238) (JMH). On a Leuchars estate map of 1789 it is shown combined with Nethermuirs about 0.75 km. to the north-east with a total area of about 500 acres (RHP1275) (JMH).
