? G àrd or àird + ?

The first element would seem to be, or to be related to, G à(i)rd ‘height’, found locally in for example Kinnaird KMB (PNF 2). The second element is more problematical. The ending -if when word-final could perfectly well represent the OG dative plural ending –(a)ibh, with underlying *àrdaibh or *àirdibh ‘at (the) heights’. However, the final –t following –if is more difficult to explain. It may be intrusive, but if so, it proved remarkably persistent.

The family which took its name from Airdit first appear in the retinue of the earls of Fife, and were presumably his tenants. The earliest member on record (third quarter of twelfth century) has the OE name of Derling (Dēorling, Dyrling; see Black 1946, under Darling); see also LEU Intro., Early Scots Names.

The mill of Airdit was also known as Moonzie Mill LEU, q.v.

Airdit KTT (PNF 2) is probably a transferred name from Airdit LEU.
