‘East end’. The lands of Kinnear, which were divided into two parts in the mid-thirteenth century, when the western part was given to Balmerino Abbey (Balm. Lib. nos. 12–14), and now consist of Wester and Easter Kinnear, occupy the whole east end of the parish and territory of Kilmany. It is no doubt this position that gave rise to its name. Although the parish was probably not constituted as such until the twelfth century, Kilmany aka Rathilletshire would have formed a recognisable territorial unit from a much earlier period. For details of the medieval boundaries of Wester Kinnear, and the names of many minor features, see KLM Intro.; also Taylor and Henderson 1998.
On 11 March 1512 James IV granted to John Kinnear of that ilk the lands and barony of Kinnear, with pertinents viz manor, tower and fortalice of Kinnear, with their demesne lands and mill, Over and Nether Kedlock LOG with mill, and the Torr (of Kedlock), with tenants etc., which lands John personally resigned; the lands of *Thaneslands LEU, viz a third of Strathburn LEU, Fordel LEU and Fetters, with the mill of Strathburn, half of the land of Kitattie # LEU and Craigsanquhar LEU, which lands David Kinnear, father of John, resigned; all of which lands the king incorporated into a free barony of Kinnear (RMS ii no. 3715). A very similar definition is given in 1543 (Retours (Fife) no. 2); and in 1548 (RMS iv no.179).
The NGR is of Kinnear Tower (ruins) beside Easter Kinnear.
