Ailie Rocks CUS C NS988857 1 393 0m
Ailie Rocks 1866 OS 6 inch 1st edn.
en Ailie + Sc or SSE rock
Ailie may well contain a suffixed form of G ail ‘rock’, such as ailech ‘rocky place’, but with no forms earlier than the nineteenth century this derivation is tentative. If correct, then ‘rocks’ has been added later, referring to the same feature, when the name itself was no longer understood. The rocks in question lie close to the shore on the east side of harbour basin of Culross burgh.
