Kempstane # FGN S NO422284 1
Hempstone 1775 Ainslie/Fife
Hempstone 1827 Ainslie/East Fife
Kempstane 1855 OS 6 inch 1st edn
Going by the earliest OS form, this name would seem to comprise Sc kemp ‘champion, warrior’ + Sc stane ‘stone’. However, the Ainslie form throws doubt on this. The OS Name Book (32, 64) gives no suggestion that there was any other form, describing the object as follows: ‘Two cottage dwellings occupied by farm labourers; in the posession [sic] of John Scott farmer Craighead and the property of John Berry Esq. of Tayfield’. The name does not seem to have survived, at least not in the modern street-nomenclature.
