Probably so named from the good view obtained from it of the Carse of Gowrie, on the north side of the Tay, west of Dundee. It is part of Newport-on-Tay. The OS Name Book, while giving no indication of the origin of the name, situates it ‘east of Easter Newport’ on the Tayfield Estate (32, 80).
