‘Bog-alder, alder by a bog’? Sc arn is first recorded in 1660 in ABD (‘Giltie of cutting of grein wod in the arnes of Bogiesyid’), and is still found in the modern dialect. It is a reduced form of Sc alron(e) ‘alder’ (DOST).
Marked but not named on OS 6 inch 1st edn (1855), Bogearn is situated c.200 m north of Bogton KLM (q.v.), in the same low-lying wet land close to the Motray Water. No building is marked on the OS 1:10,000 map (2007) at this site.
