Built in 1815 to commemorate the victory of British forces at Waterloo, but according to Millar it was ‘raised on the ruins of a much older building, the date of which is unrecorded’ (1895 ii, 274). There is, however, no surviving evidence of an older building at the site (NMRS NO42NW 10).
