‘Rattling or noisy ford’. The Latin of the 1592 charter translates as ‘ford of sounds’, i.e. ‘noisy ford’. The eponymous ford is over the burn running north-west into the Pitcairlie Burn, which itself runs south to become the Auchtermuchty Burn. Its eight figure NGR is NO2450 1415.
