‘Cold well(s)’? It is actually unlikely, given the earliest forms, that the first element was originally Sc cauld, but it had been assimilated to this by the eighteenth century. It has not proved possible to distinguish in every case between early forms of Caldwells and those of Gaddon CLS (q.v.).[100]

    It is not on Blaeu (Pont) East Fife or Blaeu (Gordon) Fife.
