? G cùilt + ? G ràth
‘A fort or defended settlement (ràth) in a corner or recess (cùilt)’? While this etymology is offered only tentatively, it could be seen as a fairly accurate description of the position of Coultra, hidden away as it is between Coultra Hill, Green Hill and Tay Mount near the south-western boundary of BMO. The element cùilt appears more certainly in Cults CLT (PNF 2, which see for further discussion; see also Watson 1926, 140).
