? Sc cairn + Sc den

Most likely ‘the den or steep valley by a cairn’, the den in question being the course of the Motray Water, which forms the parish boundary here with KMY. ‘An adjoining field in Kilmany parish is called Cairnbank’ (Campbell 1899, 641), perhaps relating to the same cairn.[76]
