‘Well of the sons of Aodh (Aed)’? One of the lay abbots of Abernethy in the twelfth century was Aodh, earlier Aed (often Latinised Hugo), son of Gillemícheil earl of Fife, and father of Orm (for whom see Ormiston ABE, above). If this analysis is correct, it would be expected that the well lay on or near the boundary between the territory of Auchtermuchty and that of Abernethy, and in fact its association with The Howe, which supplies the approximate NGR, suggests that this was indeed the case.
