This name, which attaches to a suburb of Auchtermuchty, may have been anything but holy, being given in a spirit of irony or facetiousness. OS Name Book (51, 8) gives no indication as to why it is so called, describing it as follows: ‘The houses extending from the North end of Burn Side to Reedie Mill. The houses on the West side of the road are one and two stories high, those on the East side one story; all in good repair, with gardens attached. The property of the Western Bank of Scotland, and H. W. Walker Esq., Writer Auchtermuchty’. OS 6 inch 1st edn also shows Jock’s Well at the south end of Holy Land, the OS Name Book (ibid.) giving no indication of how it got its name.
