Sc green + Sc mire

‘Green mire or bog’. The eponymous mire, now drained, was an eastern extension of the mire which gave its name to Myres (of Auchtermuchty), for which see Myres, below. The adjective green suggests relatively good grass cover, presumably in the drier summer months, a fact borne out also in the references to cow’s grass (see e.g. 1663 and 1680).
