G creag + ?

Discussed in PNF 1, 187, where comparison is made with the name Kennoway (PNF 2). However, Cunnoquhie MML(PNF 4) should also be considered as a possible parallel (containing G cuinge ‘narrow pass or strait; defile’). The OS Name Book is more pessimistic regarding the derivation: ‘A narrow steep ridge nearly covered with Furze, over which the Burgh Boundary runs. This name is noted in the Charters describing the extent of the Borough. There is no chance of getting a meaning for it’ (135, 17).

It survives in the Burntisland street-name Craigkennochie Terrace.
