Sc braid + Sc lea
‘Broad open grasslands’. Although only recorded in its SSE form, it is safe to assume that this name was coined in Scots, and can be compared with Braidleas, Pitliver DFL (PNF 1, 353), Breadleas SLN (PNF 1) and *Braidleas CRA (PNF 3). Compare also Leys AMY, in the hills further north.
Though not on OS Pathf., the name is still current and appears on OS 1:10,000 map (2007). Nearby OS Pathf. Braeside Villa (NO228124), on the other side of the old road from Auchtermuchty to Perth, is a late twentieth-century creation, since neither the name nor the buildings appear on maps before the 1970s.
