G srath + en Kinness
‘Strath or broad valley of the Kinness Burn SSL’. The burn-name on its own is stressed on the second syllable, but as part of the name Strathkinness it is stressed on the first.
It is divided into Strathkinness and ‘the other Strathkinness’ as early as 1160. For the ‘other Strathkinness’, *Strathkinness Martin and Strathkinness Mels<n>og, see *Balmartin SSL.
St Andrews Priory had held Strathkinness since 1140, as one of the lands granted by Bishop Robert’s foundation charter (St A. Lib. 122), but acquired the ‘other Strathkinness’ from the Culdees by 1160 in exchange for Priory lands, as is evident from the terms of Malcolm IV’s confirmation of the possessions and liberties of the Priory (RRS i no. 173, and RRS i no. 174, for relevant text of which see entry for 1160 above).
OS Pathf. also shows Easter Strathkinnes and Nether Strathkinnes.
