Bishop’s Wood 1855 OS 6 inch 1st edn [‘place of Archbishop Sharp’s murder’]
SSE bishop + SSE wood
Lying on the Bishop’s Road (q.v.) where that road crosses Magus Muir, it is so called as the site of Archbishop Sharp’s murder by Covenanters in 1679. Ainslie/Fife (1775) does not mark the wood, but does mark a monument there: ‘Stones in Memory of the Murderers of Bishop Sharp’. Today it boasts two monuments, one commemorating Sharp, the other his murderers.
